Innovation, analysis, research and education – KURZ and Synchron focus on sustainable solutions
Sustainability is core to the Leonhard KURZ overall strategy. As the global leader in thin film technology KURZ continuously looks for ways to reduce their environmental impact, with a 2040 zero emissions target. Representing KURZ in Sub-Saharan Africa, Synchron drives this innovation through the marketing and distribution of KURZ transfer foils through analysis, research and education of sustainable solutions.
Two recent developments will now ensure a more sustainable outcome for packaging that is embellished in decorative Hot foil and Cold transfer foil. These developments will allow brand owners, designers and converters to continue to achieve brilliance in shelf presence and product differentiation, with the knowledge that their packaging will be recycled, and their production processes will have less of an impact on the environment.

Paper and board packaging embellished with Hot and Cold transfer foil products is 100% recyclable in South Africa
Although Hot and Cold transfer Foil was proven to be recyclable in Europe a few years ago, it is essential for this to be proven in a South African context. Good news is that Synchron, in collaboration with industry partners, have proven that Paper and Board Packaging embellished with Hot and Cold transfer foil products is 100% recyclable South Africa.
Recent analysis at MPACT LAB in Stellenbosch, in accordance with international CEPI guidelines revealed that paper and board packaging, embellished in various coverages of decorative transfer foil ranging from 8% to over 60%, is 100% recyclable. Furthermore, it is important to note that MPACT completed research to confirm that recycling mills are able to collect, sort and recycle transfer foil embellished packaging in the common mixed waste category without an issue.
Synchron would like to thank MPACT LAB for continuously driving innovation in an exceptional and professional way, their contribution to the packaging industry is significant and greatly appreciated. The announcement of 100% recyclability is key for the label, carton and board industry and allows brand owners and designers to continue creating magic using KURZ decorative Hot and Cold transfer foil in their designs with a sustainable conscience.

Driving sustainability with reduced PET carriers
KURZ is making a direct positive impact on the environment by focusing on reducing emissions during production and minimising waste post-application. Through innovative advancements, KURZ has decreased the use of Polyester (PET) carriers in their Hot and Cold Transfer foils. A standout example is the Cold Transfer Foil ECOFIN CWO SLIM, which utilises a 6-micron PET carrier. This breakthrough significantly lowers emissions during foil production and reduces PET waste for converters after application.
Crucial to this innovation is KURZ’s commitment to quality, upheld through rigorous research, testing and customer trials. ECOFIN CWO is now available globally, including in South Africa, delivering exceptional quality results alongside environmental advantages. We strongly encourage our African customers to adopt this more sustainable foil, contributing to a forward-thinking approach to climate change on the continent.
At Synchron, sustainability is woven into the fabric of our organisation. Through focused efforts on Responsible Sourcing and Waste Management, we are ensuring a more sustainable future – in some cases, two steps at a time.
