The Raafontuur wine label proves that packaging can be just as expressive as the product it represents. The creation of the label was a deeply collaborative process, carefully crafted to reflect the heart and soul behind the brand. Designed by the talented team at Bravo Design, the project was guided by the vision of Brenden Schwartz, founder and owner of the agency.
To ensure the label truly embodied their story, founders Lourens and Esté spent countless hours around Bravo’s boardroom table, immersed in discussion, exploration and creative brainstorming. They envisioned a design that would encapsulate their journey – one filled with music, poetry and adventure. With the guidance and expertise of the Bravo team, their ideas took shape, evolving from abstract concepts into a label that perfectly reflects the soul of Raafontuur.
Every detail – from the intricate linework to the flowing forms – is intentional. It transforms the wine label into a canvas for emotion and meaning, inviting consumers to engage beyond the bottle.

What role does hot stamping play in premium labels?
To bring the artwork to life, Bravo Design selected premium KURZ hot stamping foils — specifically KURZ 341 purple and KURZ 428 gold, supplied in South Africa by Synchron Markings. These foils were chosen for their ability to add a premium tactile and visual finish, elevating the label with contrast, shine and texture.
Hot stamping is not just decorative. It serves as a high-performance finishing technique that enhances both the aesthetic and functional value of packaging. The process involves transferring a foil layer onto the substrate using heat and pressure, offering a permanent, eye-catching result that elevates brand presence on the shelf.
Why are designers choosing hot foil for wine labels?
Hot stamping has become increasingly popular in the wine and alcoholic beverage industry for one simple reason: it combines beauty with brand storytelling. With the right foil, a label can communicate sophistication, quality, and attention to detail – all within seconds of a customer picking up the bottle.
Synchron Markings supplied the specialised KURZ foils that brought the vision to life. These foils are known for their exceptional durability, colour clarity and compatibility with a range of label materials and printing systems.

What makes Synchron a go-to for hot stamping in Southern Africa?
As the authorised distributor of KURZ hot stamping foils, Synchron supports local designers and printers with technical expertise, innovative materials, and quick delivery. Our wide portfolio includes solutions for various packaging applications – from wine and spirits to cosmetics and premium FMCG. Synchron empowers South African design talent by giving them access to world-class finishing options that elevate local brands to global standards.
How do you choose the right foil for a label design?
Selecting the right foil depends on several factors: the material of the label, the desired finish (gloss, matte, holographic), and the brand’s identity. For Raafontuur, the use of both gold and purple hot foil gave the design depth and distinction, perfectly aligning with the emotional narrative behind the wine.
Designers should work closely with their label printers and foil suppliers to understand the compatibility of materials and finishing effects.

Can a label tell a story?
Yes, and Raafontuur is a prime example. While the wine inside the bottle reflects craftsmanship and care, the label reflects heart and heritage. It’s a story not just told, but felt, and that’s the power of thoughtful design combined with premium finishing.
