Leonhard Kurz trend team transforms global design insights into tangible packaging solutions

The packaging industry is influenced by shifting consumer expectations, sustainability demands and design innovation. LEONHARD KURZ, a global expert in surface finishing, is leading the way as it has recently unveiled its latest trend-driven packaging concept, ‘60° – Creative Boxes to Inspire’ at LUXE PACK Monaco.

This groundbreaking approach showcases how state-of-the-art finishing techniques, sustainable materials and cutting-edge design come together to create premium packaging solutions.

Translating trends into packaging design

The ‘60°’ concept is a unique annual project developed by KURZ’s design management team. Each year, their interdisciplinary trend team transforms global design insights into tangible packaging solutions. The latest edition introduces a striking triangular shape, crafted from high-quality materials and assembled with an innovative interlocking system that requires no adhesives.

This year’s edition was created using materials from Koehler Paper and intricate embossing produced with technology from Hinderer + Mühlich (H+M), a KURZ subsidiary. By integrating advanced finishing techniques, KURZ provides a glimpse into the future of premium packaging.

Four key design trends shaping packaging

The ‘60°’ series translates complex global trends into four distinct design themes, each reflecting societal shifts and consumer behaviours:

The New Drama packaging trend embraces high-contrast, dramatic visuals that confront today’s pressing global issues.

The New Drama: A bold wake-up call

This trend embraces high-contrast, dramatic visuals that confront today’s pressing global issues. Inspired by theatrical storytelling, The New Drama blends deep reds and muted greys to symbolise urgency and hope. COLORIT® 307007 Red On Stage, a high-gloss, transparent red, brings hidden truths to light, while Silent White COLORIT® V 307073 offers a soft, bluish-grey contrast.

The Great Analog packaging trend revives traditional craftsmanship and vintage aesthetics.

The Great Analog: A return to authenticity

Amid digital saturation, this trend revives traditional craftsmanship and vintage aesthetics. Inspired by old printing techniques and wood textures, The Great Analog bridges the past and present with tactile micro-embossing and elegant metallic hues. LUXOR® 111354 Blue Touch delivers a shimmering grey-blue effect, while Iconic Brass LIGHT LINE® 946060 creates nostalgic holographic effects.

The Non-Sense packaging trend embraces humour, irony and exaggerated contrasts.

The Non-Sense: Rule-Breaking with a playful twist

Targeting a younger audience, The Non-Sense embraces humour, irony and exaggerated contrasts in packaging. Inspired by Gen Z’s unconventional approach to branding, this design features vibrant hues like Meme Green LUXOR® 111358 N and the transparent Pinky Rosy LUMAFIN® 722 Red, blending absurdity with bold, eye-catching aesthetics.

The Very Nothing packaging trend focuses on subtle elegance and simplicity.

The Very Nothing: Embracing minimalism

Stripping away excess, The Very Nothing focuses on subtle elegance and simplicity. With finely embossed, tone-on-tone details, this trend redefines luxury through restraint. The Gentle Metal LUXOR® 111356 N alternates between matte silver and warm brown, paired with Soft Brown LUMAFIN® 751 Brown for a calming, refined appearance.

The future of packaging design

KURZ’s ‘60°’ collection continues to receive international recognition, winning prestigious awards like the Red Dot Packaging Design Award, the German Brand Award, and the German Design Award. This approach highlights how the packaging industry can blend innovation, sustainability and artistic expression to stay ahead of evolving consumer expectations.
