See how designing with foil from the start transforms a simple notebook into a premium, production-ready brand asset.
Synchron Markings developed this notebook as more than a communication piece. It was created as a practical demonstration of how embellishment, when considered early in the design process, can strengthen brand presence, elevate perception, and deliver measurable value across the packaging journey.
Positioned within Synchron’s Brand Ambassador approach, the project reflects a shift in how the company works with designers, brand owners, and printers. The focus is not simply on supplying materials, but on enabling better outcomes through collaboration, technical insight, and commercially viable design decisions.
Rather than approaching foil as a finishing detail, the objective was to show what happens when it is designed with intent, which is aligned to production realities, application requirements, and end-use performance from the outset.
The brand context
At the centre of the Synchron brand is the peacock, which is a symbol of confidence, visibility, and distinctiveness. These qualities closely reflect the role of embellishment in packaging. It is not simply decorative. It is about creating presence, differentiation, and recognition at the point of sale.
The notebook translates this brand philosophy into a physical application. It demonstrates how a strong identity can be reinforced through the use of foil, which supports both storytelling and technical credibility.
From concept to application
While the peacock provides a visual anchor, the broader design language reflects Synchron’s role across multiple areas of brand enhancement, which includes decorative embellishment, architectural materials, and brand protection.
The challenge was not just to create something visually appealing, but to develop a design that could be successfully translated into production using foil.
This introduced important constraints, such as:
- Foil does not fade or soften like ink
- Every line must be deliberate and clearly defined
- The design must work within the physical limits of foil blocking
- The composition must support both branding and material performance.
Design refinement

Through a few rounds of refinement, the design was simplified and made stronger.
The lines were adjusted to be clearer and more defined, taking inspiration from the shape and flow of peacock feathers, but importantly, making sure they would actually work when applied in foil.
The final design includes:
- Clean, continuous lines
- A defined border to suit the foil blocking process
- A central Synchron logo that sits comfortably within the design.
This allows the foil to do what it’s meant to do, catch the light, add movement, and bring the design to life, without losing clarity or causing issues in production.
Material and embellishment
The notebook cover was finished using KURZ MSU 220 Gold foil, chosen for its reliable performance and clean, premium look. It delivers sharp detail across both fine lines and larger areas of the design, ensuring the final result looks consistent every time it’s produced.
More importantly, it shows how the right material choice supports the design, not just how it looks, but how well it works in production.
The outcome

The final notebook serves as both a practical object and a strategic communication tool. It shows how:
- Design, material selection, and application expertise can work together
- Embellishment can be integrated into the design process, rather than added at the end
- A simple item can be elevated into a tactile, memorable brand asset.
Ultimately, the project reflects a broader approach to packaging – one that moves beyond surface-level decoration and towards insight-led, production-ready design.
A different way of working
This case study highlights an important shift. The real value of embellishment isn’t just in the material itself, but it’s in how early it’s considered, and how well it’s built into the design from the start.
By connecting the idea stage with real production requirements, Synchron helps create packaging that not only looks good, but actually works – consistently, at scale, and in a way that makes commercial sense.
